Theology, as the search for an intellectual explanation of faith, has always been nourished and expressed using concepts and models of understanding that would enable it to deepen faith and transmit it in a manner appropriate and accessible in new cultural and historical contexts. An analysis of the historical development of the treatise on God and the Trinity can show how theology was first built on the premises of the paradigm of substance and only later from the paradigm of subject. Today, changes brought about by science – such as the theory of relativity, quantum field theory, and other theories such as the Big Bang and the slow process of the formation of the universe – together with our experience of living in a tightly structured and binding world of interconnections, point in the direction of a new communicative and relational paradigm that allow us to rethink the triune God as a perichoretical communion of love.
